Le sauvetage

retour à son oeuvre------------------------------------retour à sa vie

W. Bouguereau had many eager pupils. Emile Munier was one. ''Le Sauvetage'' (''The Rescue'') sent to the 1894 Salon could almost be a Bouguereau. Two putti are painted like children with bird wings sticking out of their shoulderblades. One of them dips his bow in the water to recover his quiver. Their mealy-mouthed expressions border on parody. Munier was not incompetent, but, with nothing to say, he said what others wanted to hear. ''Le Sauvetage'' made $225,000
